bus stations

The Port Authority Bus Terminal(AKA: The P. A. Terminal)

Between 40 & 42 Sts. and 8th and 9th Avenue.

This is where you catch buses to all over the USA. There's the Transport of NJ buses, The Red and Tan Line, Greyhound, Shortline...and probably bus lines I've never heard of.

(This is the bus station where many young runaways end up. Ya know, the one's from the Mid West who come here seeking stardom, and end up on the streets as drug addicts and / or prostitutes. The pimps wait in the station to greet the youngsters as they arrive. The infamous "Minnesota Strip" is not far from there. Actually, these days, I hear that Covenant House has reps set up at tables in the station for runaways who have no place to go. So maybe some youths get saved from the pimps).

Anyway, there are a variety of windows where you can buy tickets for your particular bus and destination as well as an information desk. Many bus lines prefer you buy your ticket(s) in advance as the driver carries no cash or change. This transpired in the 1980's, when bus drivers were getting mugged enroute to wherever they were going. If you arrive early, you may want to check out this rule, as you don't want to hang out on the bus line, only to find out that they don't accept cash as fare, and that you needed to purchase a ticket in advance to board the bus.

The P.A Terminal has been rebuilt over the years, and you can pick up flowers, cards, gifts, health food, cakes, etc., in the local stores within.

Pennsylvania Station(also know as Penn. Station)

32nd St, between 7th and 8th Aves.

At this station, you catch mostly trains. The Long Island Railroad(LIRR), The Transport of New Jersey trains, and trains I probably am unfamiliar with. I believe you can also get buses here as well, like one that goes up to Canada...$80.00 one way to Montreal. Not totally sure about this, so you'll have to check it out for yourself.

The place has been remodelled over the years and there is a whole underground fast food-eating mall there...i think also an entrance somewhere to K-mart.

The Port Authority Bus Terminal at the George Washington Bridge

178th St, between Broadway and Fort(Ft.) Washington Aves.

There's the Transport of NJ buses and The Red and Tan Line. I've never taken anything else but those lines from here and there might be other bus lines there. This station is right over the George Washington Bridge. It's an interesting melting pot of a neighborhood over there.
